Universities Women's Cricket Club First XI remain undefeated and joint competition leaders with Sydney after four rounds of the SWGCA competition. In our first competition match at Bankstown Oval UWCC 133 def Bankstown 79. Outstanding performances for UWCC were NZ International Ros Kember 73 and Aust VC Lisa Sthalekar 3 -14. She was well supported by breakers squad member Sara Hungerford 3 -7.
Round two at Waverley Oval saw a determined UWCC dismiss Wallsend for 177. UWCC captain Lisa Sthalekar lead from the front with excellent figures of 5 -21 and Kate Owen 2-27. UWCC passed the Wallsend total for the loss of just two wickets. Opening bat Ros Kember again dominant with 55 and well supported by Australian Rep Alex Blackwell 41 to help secure the victory.
Round three at Village Green against Northern District saw UWCC win the toss and post one of their highest totals ever with 4-316. There were many great performances, Alex Blackwell 85, Kate Blackwell 98no, Ros Kember 40 and Kate Owen 40. Northern Districts 8-161 never in the hunt. Sara Hungerford was the best bowler with 3-50 to help Universities win their third game straight.
In round four UWCC 109 def StGeorge/ Sutherland 72. UWCC Sara Hungerford 33 and Kate Owen 30 were best performers with bat. StGeorge/ Sutherland never recovered from 7-40 to be all our for 72. UWCC Kate Blackwell 3-16 and Erica Myer 2-10 and Allison Parkin 2-13 helped secure a great victory at Dave Phillips Oval.
Our next challenge is in two weeks as we meet defending champions Sydney at Village Green. This top of the table class will bring together some of the best women cricketers in the country and could be the start of a new era for UWCC as they continue to be a force in this years competition.
UWCC are playing some outstanding cricket but not getting carried away as it is a long season ahead.
