Sydney Uni was out for revenge on Sunday in the inner west derby against the Western Suburbs Magpies in the FOXTEL Sydney AFL Premier Division, after going down by 1 goal in their previous encounter in 2007. The Students have been in good form in recent weeks and they took to Henson Park with only a win in mind.
It was the Magpies however, who got off to the better start kicking the first 2 goals, before the Students reacted with goals from Chris McLachlan and James Terry. Two late goals from the Magpies, and a goal denied by the siren left the Students trailing by 2 goals at quarter time.
After stern words from Sydney Uni coach Daniel Archer, the Students lifted their efforts in the second quarter. Damien Hoo was unstoppable up forward and in the midfield. Janis Blums and Iain Loughan were strong in the backline, helping to restrict the Magpies to just 1 goal, as the Students went into half time 3 points ahead.
The third quarter shaped up to be a close encounter however the Students came out firing, kicking goal after goal in a 5 goal to 1 quarter. With Brendan Mitchell dominating his wing and moving the ball well to Andrew Kreafft in the forward line, the Students looked unstoppable. Nick Costello provided plenty of run off the halfback line and Ben Mankarious was a ball winner all over the ground.
With a 29 point lead going into the last quarter, the Students looked home. However, the Magpies had other ideas as they slowly reduced the margin on the scoreboard, but the Students held on to win by 2 goals in a good performance that will give them confidence going into next weeks game against the North Shore Bombers.
The Students would like to invite everyone down to Sydney University Oval No. 1 this Saturday 18th August for our annual Ladies Day celebrations, supported by Scooteria. This year we are raising money and awareness for Prostate Cancer with a big day of football and an after party at The Grandstand Bar at Oval No. 1 with giveaways, a barbeque and DJs until late. Ladies Day kicks off at 1 pm with the Premier Division Seniors’ match starting at 2 pm.
