Sydney University capped off a perfect season by winning the women’s Super League First Grade and Under 21 soccer grand finals double at Edensor Park on Sunday.
First Grade defeated Southern Branch 2-1 in the season decider, while the Under 21s beat Western NSW Panthers 1-nil to take the title. First Grade went through the season undefeated.
The premierships will automatically elevate the teams to the Women’s Premier League for the 2008 competition.
Goals to Anna Fudeh in the 39th minute and Belinda Seers in the 62nd minute helped secure the First Grade title.
The win was a sweet one for Fudeh, who was a member of the Under 21 side that was defeated in the 2003 grand final. Sydney University First Grade side created history that year when they won their first title with a 1-nil win over St George in the NSW State League. The combined efforts of the two teams in 2003 saw Sydney University elevated to Super League.
Sunday’s Under 21 grand final was a gripping affair, with the deadlock finally broken in the 80th minute when Kate McFarlane found the net to avenge Sydney University’s loss in the major semi-final.
