Sydney University Women’s AFL progressed to their first grand final in five years when they thrashed 2006 premiers Wests 12.12 (84) to 3.8 (26) in a one-sided major semi-final at the weekend.
In a dominating performance, Sydney University kept Wests goal-less in the first half and went into the major break with a 46-point lead. The Students maintained their superiority in the last two quarters and finished the match with a 58-point difference.
Gianna Abbonizio and Talei Owen scored two goals apiece, while six other players each kicked goals. Outstanding performances also came from Kyrsten Winkley and Heidi Weidner in defence.
Sydney University now turn their attention to next weekend’s grudge match against Newtown Breakaways. Newtown finished the season as minor premiers, eight points clear of second-placed Sydney University.
The Breakaways, aptly named after splitting from Sydney University to form an independent side, have proven tough competition in the past.
Recent games between the two sides have resulted in even tussles, with only 10 points separating the two teams in the past three encounters.
The grand final will be played from noon on Saturday, August 25, at W. H. Wagener Oval, Whitfield Ave, Ashbury.
