Sydney University Swimming Club has been included in a revamped structure for Sydney clubs, announced recently by Swimming NSW.

Under the streamlined structure, from next April Sydney will be divided into four swimming areas, replacing the existing districts.

SUSC will be part of the new Sydney East Area along with clubs from St George Sutherland District, Eastern Suburbs and the City of Sydney

Sydney University Head Coach Stephen Alderman, liaised with other district coaches to organise a trial program of events for a meeting Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre last Saturday.

“The meet proved to be a great opportunity for our swimmers to make acquaintance in a friendly and competitive environment before the official amalgamation of districts next April,” Alderman said

“SUSC was strongly represented by 40 swimmers, from Jonathan Newton, who is preparing for Olympic trials in March, to eight-year-old Imogen Brent, who competed at SOPAC for the first time.”

Newton swam 22.97 seconds in winning the open 50-metre freestyle championship.

Other new medallists at the meet were Colleen Anthony, Molly McGrath, Taylor Aitken, Tia Sutton, Freya Krishnan and Zac Newton.

Meanwhile, another club member, 11-year-old Jessica Donovan, from Alexandria, qualified to compete in her first NSW State Age Championships, while competing in the St George Sutherland Inter-District Invitational at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

She will now contest the gruelling 200m butterfly for her club, Sydney University, next January.
