Sydney University cross-country runner Lara Tamsett has won the junior women’s division at the WRMA World Mountain Running Championships in Ovronnaz, Switzerland.
The Sports Scholarship holder and Australian Cross-Country champion also collected a team gold when fellow Australian Veronica Wallington recovered from a fall to finish third in the event.
Tamsett won the event in 20:48.6, from Hulya Bastug of Turkey (21:01.1) and Wallington (21:06.2). Australia won the teams events from the US and Turkey.
They were the first medals Australia has won at the championships in 20 years of competition.
Tamsett had form on the board going into the event having finished 36th at the IAAF World Junior Cross-Country Championships in Mombasa.
