Swimming: Newton collects silver at Australian Championships

6 September 2007

Sydney University swimmer Jonathon Newton took just 21.81 seconds to make his mark at the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships, held in Melbourne.

That was the time Newton swam the 50-metre freestyle to finish with the silver medal, just .20s behind gold medallist Matt Targett (Melbourne Vic Centre).

Also among the medals was Michelle Engelsman, who won bronze in the women’s 50m freestyle. Engelsman stopped the clock at 24.64s in finishing third behind Queensland’s Libby Lenton and Cate Campbell.

The Sydney University Sports Scholarship holder’s swim earned Engelsman a spot on the Telstra Dolphins Australian swimming team for the 2008 FINA World Short Course Championships, to be held in Manchester, England, next April.

Engelsman also swam in the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle.

Newton and Engelsman were part of a 13-strong squad from the Sydney University Swim Club competing at the Championships.

Sydney University Scholarship holder Kate Johnson made it to the semi-finals of the 200m butterfly and the 50m butterfly, while Tim Laforest finished 12th in the 100m men’s freestyle and David Wise, Allistaire Pickles, Matt Jaukovic and Gordon Willis teamed to finish 8th in the 200m medley relay.

Other Sydney University swimmers who competed at the Championships were Anthony Fine, David Schnabl, Greg Sheine and Angela Hurley.
